From 1847 onward tens of thousands of evictions took place across Ireland. This sentenced many of those evicted to a life in exile in the USA or tragically for worse the workhouse in Ireland. This image is from a pair was published in the Illustrated London News in 1848. The image depicted the family pleading with the bailiffs while the roof is being removed from the cottage a common tactic employed to ensure the house was uninhabitable.
